On July 23rd, Governor Healey announced changes to the Emergency Assistance (EA) family shelter system that will force children and their families out with no safe place to sleep at night. This policy change will disproportionately impact immigrant families, both new arrivals and long-term MA residents. (More details here.) This is another step towards dismantling the EA shelter system that has been in place for over 40 years.
Here are ways you can take action:
Join us at the State House on, Monday July 29 at 11AM to call on our leaders to uphold access to shelter for children and families.
There will be an action in Springfield as well today Monday, July 29, 11am-12pm in front of the Governor’s Western Massachusetts office, 436 Dwight St., Suite 300, Springfield, MA 01103
We are exploring opening congregations lawns for families to sleep under tents for people with literally no where to go for nights. If you are open to exploring this, please email tsmookler@uumassaction.org
As we've shared all year, signing up to house immigrant families in the short term is still incredibly helpful. More info here, let me know if you want to chat about it! Recording of a session about hosting, pw: PFz5?yZQ; Here's some FAQ; sign up to host page.
